Program: Urban Commuting for Road Cyclists a presentation by Steve Vaccaro

Bike commuting can be a great supplement to weekend riding, but the risks of ticketing, theft and injury keep many away. Steve Vaccaro, a lifelong NYC bike commuter and lawyer representing cyclists, has an all-new presentation on what you need to start or to improve your urban bike commute, including: theft-proofing your street-locked commuter bike; avoiding tickets, collisions and injuries; fine-tuning your commute for maximum training benefit; and how to safely navigate NYC cycling infrastructure (and the commuter cyclists you will find there). Even experienced bike commuters will likely learn something new!

Steve has been riding a bike in New York City since high school. With his partner Adam White, he heads the Law Office of Vaccaro & White, specializing in representing New York City cyclists for twenty years. The firm not only represents cyclists injured by negligent motorists, pedestrians and by road defects, but it has also represented cyclists in class actions against the New York City Police Department and the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Steve also drafted and helped win passage of legislation to protect cyclists and pedestrians. Steve was profiled in the New York Law Journal as “perhaps New York City’s best-known lawyer advocate for bicyclist and pedestrian rights.”

Steve has been a member of the Transportation Alternatives Advisory Council for over ten years, is a Board member of Bike New York, writes the “Street Justice” column for Streetsblog, and is the founder of the cyclists’ political action committee, StreetsPAC. He is also an active member of the New York Cycle Club, and his law firm is pleased to sponsor Escape New York and the NYCC Women’s Racing Team.
